The Burgess family business in Australia began in 1862 when Jan Evansí (nee Burgess) great great grandfather - Edmund Burgess arrived in Australia to continue his trade as a cabinet maker and French polisher.

He quickly made his mark in recognition of his craftsmanship for quality.

In 1869 he moved to Melbourne with his family and established Burgess Furniture specializing in Occasional furniture.

Through successive generations the business grew in size and reputation, eventually creating a state-of-the-art furniture manufacturing factory occupying an 8 acre site in Preston, Victoia.

However the Burgess entrepreneurial spirit was not limited to furniture and under the management of Ern Burgess (Janís father and fourth generation Burgess), the family interests expanded to encompass Ulrich Labels (now Burgess Printing & Packaging Pty Ltd)

In 1979, through Janís interest in agriculture, Ern bought the first Burgess Rural property. Today Burgess Rural operates 5 properties in both Victoria and NSW covering more than 5,900 hectares.
